Это означает "колдун по роду занятий". У античных писателей под magus обычно понимались персидские зороастрийские жрецы. В данном случае мы имеем дело с христианским контекстом, поэтому переводить надо "колдун" или "волшебник". Можно и "волхв". Образ заимствован из "Деяний апостолов": это Симон Волхв (Magus).

[4] In primis autem praetaxata a me condicione utendum postulo, cuius talem sane formulam texui: Si vicero, vectigalium nobis concedatur immunitas; si vincar, pristina vobis tributa solvantur. [5] Aut enim hodie patriam servitutis iugo victor exuam aut victus involvam. [6] In utramque fortunam praedem me vademque recipite.'
